Description

Curtin University of Technology opened a new satellite campus in the heart of Perth’s CBD, extending its presence beyond its main Bentley location. Housed within the historic Old Perth Technical College (est. 1910), the project reimagines the heritage building as an open and innovative space with facilities conducive to holding postgraduate courses, masterclasses, seminars and training programs. The design response references the chrysalis, creating a welcoming environment for ideas, thoughts and minds to thrive and grow.

The interior transformation required sensitivity, blending historical and contemporary elements to enhance its intent and use, while addressing complex technical requirements. As part of this approach, we commissioned a series of Curtin alumni to produce furniture, lighting and tactile elements, adding a personal connection to the university and its community. Retained features include the building’s original leadlight windows, jarrah floorboards and skirting boards.

137 St George’s Terrace was awarded the first 6 Star Green Star rating in WA for an interior within a heritage-listed building.
