Description

Housed in a former bank building in Mount Hawthorn, Sonny’s is a 60-seat neighbourhood bar and restaurant with a woodfired kitchen. The operators subscribe to the belief that food and drinks are best when shared, and their ever-evolving menu and inviting venue reflects this ethos.

Inspired by European sidewalk bistros, the entry façade was opened up with new timber window treatments and built-in seating to maximise connection with people and the street. The restaurant’s interior was designed to bring in a sense of warmth, comfort and openness—the sharing of good food over conversation and laughter, much like being at a friend’s house.

Our rich colour palette was grounded in browns, oranges and creams, inspired by 1970s tones that offset the cold starkness of the disused bank. Highlights in Klein Blue (a pigment first mixed by French artist Yves Klein) provide contrast, while terrazzo, tiles and steel trimmed tables hint at the origins and inspiration of traditional neighbourhood bistros.
