Description

Gordon Street Garage is a roastery, espresso bar and 300-seat restaurant, housed within a converted mechanics’ workshop in West Perth, just outside of Perth’s CBD. After four years of operation, the front section of the venue required reconfiguration to improve operating efficiency and better suit the all-day coffee, lunch and dinner crowds.

Our design established a more distinct identity for the space, balancing the creation of intimate and informal dining areas with the takeaway bustle of the morning crowds awaiting their coffee orders—all whilst remaining true to the industrial history and inherent character of the wider venue.

The original timber Oregon ceiling was revealed with new lighting installed. Jarrah dado railing, hand-crafted leather banquettes and green and tan leather booth seats reminiscent of classic Holden HR bench seats were installed, along with spotted gum timber tables paired with tub chairs. Dark grey window treatments were introduced to filter the sunlight, creating a more relaxing dining atmosphere and encouraging patrons to stay and enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner.

In addition to reconfiguring the front section, we designed Next Door—a European-style alfresco courtyard with a deli and providore that provides a counterbalance to the inward facing nature of the existing venue. Crushed limestone flooring, reclaimed timber decking sourced from old factory beams and olive trees establish a relaxed outdoor setting.
